I started my fragrance collection a couple years ago with D&G The One, and since then I have bought many other designer and niche fragrances. It's been a fun experience and I would recommend collecting to anyone who likes to smell good. Recently, I came across a fragrance that sounded a bit like an anomaly; a bit strange but also intriguing.
The fragrance was Kitten Fur by Demeter.
I immediately spent the $35 for a 100ml bottle because I just had to try it, and honestly, $35 isn't a bad price for a blind buy.
Well, it just came in the mail and I want to share some of my initial thoughts and feelings about it. I will be including an update at a later time to discuss how it performs and how long it lasts.
Now, I had never heard of Demeter prior to finding Kitten Fur. I have to say that they are not your typical fragrance house. In fact, based on the simplicity of their products and the packaging I initially thought these guys were a start-up, but to my surprise, they were founded in 1993.
Take a look at what other colognes they offer. They are all very simple, one dimensional fragrances. They all seem to be eau de cologne concentration, which means they probably don't preform that well.
Anyways, let's talk about Kitten Fur.
First off, and perhaps most importantly, it DOES NOT smell like a kitten's fur. I know, it's somewhat disappointing especially if you bought this expecting to smell like your cat. My girlfriend was very disappointed when she realized it didn't smell like her beloved long-lost cat, Mr. Kitty.
While I was not able to find the exact note breakdown for Kitten Fur, the first note I can detect is a subtle blast of vanilla followed by a clean, soap-like feeling. It's kind of like a fresh out of the shower feeling. It also reminds me of something that would be released by Prada who typically tend to create very clean, soapy fragrances.
In terms of when I would wear this one: I think it would be best suited as an at home fragrance. Because it's an eau de cologne and doesn't project that much, I think that if you wore this one to work or anywhere public really that the scent would be subsumed by other fragrances around you.
It's definitely soft and almost intimate, so I don't think you want to use this one as an everyday fragrance.
Plus, imagine how people would react when you tell them you're wearing Kitten Fur:
Girl: Wow, Brad. What are you wearing? It smells nice.
Brad: Just a little something I picked up called Kitten Fur
Girl: Oh cool. I love cats...
[Instantly Friend-zoned]
Personally, it feels to me like a fragrance you would throw on before going to grandma's house; not something you would wear on a date.
I think that Kitten Fur by Demeter, while not actually smelling like a cat's fur, has potential and would make an interesting addition to anyone's collection.
I'm not sure if I'll buy anything else from Demeter because I like well-blended scents, but if you're just starting your collection or want to try something a bit more linear and simple then this company may be for you.
Generally, you can tell how a fragrance is going to preform based on how much it costs. Kitten Fur goes for $34 on Demeter's website which isn't a bad price. The fragrance preform fairly well, lasting about three hours on my skin, which is pretty good for a cheap scent. Also, Demeter sent me a free 30ml bottle of their Cardamom fragrance with my purchase, so essentially it's like buy one get a smaller bottle free.
I'm not sure if they always send a free bottle and if the bottle is always cardamom or a random scent. I'd be interested to know if any of you have bought from Demeter what your free bottle was.
Overall, I'd give Kitten Fur by Demeter a 6/10. It isn't great by any means, but it's a pretty fun scent.
Have you ever tried Kitten Fur or any other fragrance by Demeter? I would love to hear about your experience! If not, do you think you'd be interested in trying Kitten Fur?
