"You'll Smell Like Everyone Else": The Truth Behind The Claim

If you've ever watched fragrance reviews, you have most certainly heard at least someone claim that if you wear a particular scent that you'll smell like everyone one else. If you're an avid consumer of that kind of content like myself you've probably heard several different people make that claim and possibly even the same person make it multiple times. Hearing that you'll smell like everyone else may have even deterred you from buying a fragrance.

I just want to briefly respond to this fairly common claim because, honestly, I've never understood it.

The fact is this: the majority of men do not seem to wear a fragrance on a daily basis, and even if they do, it's probably something inexpensive, and therefore, subpar. If you really want to smell like everyone else, go to your local drugstore and buy something for $10.

But really, I would say the most common scent for a guy is no scent at all. Guy's typically are not concerned about smelling nice all the time. Perhaps they have a bottle of something for special occasions, but most of them are not wearing Dior Sauvage on a daily basis.

Therefore, how does wearing Sauvage make you smell like everyone else?

I live near Boston and frequently use public transportation to get where I need to go. This puts me in very close proximity to a lot of people; sometimes even intimately close during busy times. My point is that if other guys were wearing Sauvage, or any other scent which is often deemed as something used by everyone, I would smell it.

But I don't.

Occasionally, I get a whiff of someone wearing something nice, but it's a rare occurrence. Most of the time, I either faintly smell something cheap or, more frequently, nothing at all.

I mean, I think what other reviewers are trying to say by making the claim that "you'll smell like everyone else" is that the scent is mass-appealing and, in a perfect world in which every guy wore a fragrance, that the scent would likely be something worn by a lot of people.

But that's not the case.

Sure, perhaps certain scents are more recognizable than others. For example, one time this guy told me he liked what I was wearing and asked if it was Versace which it was.

That's something I agree with. Certain fragrances have a generic sort of smell to them; a certain degree of familiarity, if you will. However, just because something smells a bit generic or simple doesn't mean that it'll make you smell like everyone else.

I think that if you wear a more mass-appealing scent it won't get as much attention as something a little more unique like Coach for men Platinum, but I do not believe that it will make you smell like every other guy out there. The claim that it will is, in my opinion, asinine and unfounded.

My hope in sharing my thoughts about this claim is that you won't get deterred from buying a particular scent just because you think you'll smell like everyone else.

Trust me, you won't.

So what do you all think about the claim that certain fragrances will make you smell like everyone else? Do you agree or disagree? I would love to hear your insights and opinions.
