In Defense of Purple

Purple seems to be an anomaly when it comes to colors. It's not evidently masculine, but it's not really feminine either. I think that's why purple is such a rare color to be seen in someone's outfit. Because people aren't really sure how to wear it or when the appropriate time to wear it is.

Purple can be an extremely powerful color to wear though depending on the piece. It has the ability to grab the attention of others, and quite often, it is a color that demands respect. This is because purple has always been connected with royalty or people in power. In a sense, I'd say purple is like a stronger version of pink. While pink gets you noticed, purple has the ability to hold people's focus, and much like pink, purple conveys a sense of uber confidence.

While purple can be tough to wear, I think it's a viable choice to implement into your wardrobe for a few major reasons:

-Purple conveys a strong sense on confidence. It's different from pink in the sense that it is a more subtle form of confidence. Because purple isn't as in-your-face as pink tends to be, you will seem more laid-back while wearing purple. People will be able to tell you're confident, but they also won't think you're trying to exude that confidence.

-Purple is a powerful color. I always think of a bruise when I think about purple. Therefore, I have always pictured purple as being a color a tough guy would wear. This might just be me but when I see a guy wearing dark purple, I become a bit more cautious just like with black.

- Purple comes in various shades and each shade conveys a different message. Are you feeling assertive and in need of respect? Then maybe go with dark purple. Are you feeling a bit more fun and nonchalant? Then perhaps go with a lighter shade of purple.

-Purple is incredibly versitile and is easy to implement into your outfit. Because darker shades of purple have a similar effect as black, you can wear purple with almost anything. Just remember that because it is a darker color, purple will take attention away from other accessaries you might be wearing. When you choose to wear purple, you're making the color the center of focus.

-Purple can be worn in any season. Unlike pinks/pastels or greens/browns, purple is going to look just as good no matter what season it is. This might be because purple isn't necessarily associated with a particular season like pink is with spring or green is with autumn.

Implementing a bit of purple into your wardrobe can be a great way to diversity your selection. Now, I don't think purple is a color you could pull off everyday, but if worn strategically, you'll definitely get noticed and maybe even get a compliment or two.

In my opinion, the easiest way to start wearing purple is by wearing a purple Oxford with a black sport's coat or suit. Black and purple are a classic combination and one that's really easy to pull off. Also, if you're into wearing neckties or pocket squares, purple is a really clean choice; a choice that stands-out.

So what are your thoughts about the color purple? Do you or have you considered wearing it? Let me know in the comments.

  1. Personally, I find purple easiest to implement with a sweater, but I live in a cold climate in the winter so I reserve most of my nicer garments for that season.
