When To Wear A Suit

Wearing a suit can be a powerful statement. It has the potential to convey an image of wealth, respect, success, and even admiration. Even if you're not super wealthy yet, wearing a suit can still give the illusion of power, which will alter the way people see you. Basically, it is the ultimate way to leverage your style.

Now, in this post I'm not talking about guys who have to wear a suit to work everyday. I'm talking about when you should choose to wear a suit. There's a fundamental difference between being made to do something and choosing to do something: if you are being made to wear a suit, chances are, you're being asked to look like everyone else you work with, but if you choose to wear a suit, you are separating yourself from everyone else.

So when should you choose to wear a suit?

I would say as often as you can. Obviously, there are going to be certain places where wearing a suit will be inappropriate and make you stand-out in a negative way such as going to the beach or spending time on small boat, but in situations where people are dressed in normal attire, wearing a suit will make you stand-out in a positive way.

If people see you wearing a suit when most other people are dressed-down they will most likely treat you differently. I'm always amazed at the different response I get when I'm dressed-up as opposed to dressed-down. People are just more apt to smile and be helpful.

One of my favorite moments was when I walked into a jewelers and asked to try on a Rolex. I absolutely can not afford a Rolex right now, but because I was wearing a suit, and ergo, looked like someone who would buy a Rolex, the people at the store seemed to treat me with more respect as opposed to a run-of-the-mill kind of customer.

There are a plethora of social reasons why you should wear a suit everyday, but what about the personal reasons?

Well to me, it's the big 'C', that is, Confidence. Because a well-fitted suit highlights the male physique, wearing one frequently has the potential to change the way you see yourself. And that's huge!

As someone who has Body Dysmorphic Disorder, how I see myself is the difference between having a great day and one that's not so great. Therefore, wearing a suit--or at least a sports jacket-- gives me a huge boost of confidence that I might not have if I dressed-down. So to me, dressing-up is an integral part of my day. Do I do it for other people? To an extent. But I feel like I benefit the most from doing it.

But what if you don't like wearing a suit?

Suits definitely aren't for everyone. Some guys might just wear one when they have to and choose something else when they don't. If wearing a suit everyday just isn't your thing, I would say find a particular style you love and wear it consistently. Maybe it's polo shirts with denim jeans. Maybe it's a Henley with chino pants. Maybe it's a tank-top and shorts. Whatever it is, if you love wearing it and it makes you feel great then wear it as often as you can.

Wearing a suit everyday literally has the power to change your reality. People will see you differently and treat you with more respect. You will stand-out from others in a positive way. And most importantly, you will feel great about yourself. After all, there's a reason the suit has been around for over a century. It is the one piece that will never go out of style!
